Celiac disease occurs due to an allergry to protein called gluten. This allergy causes damage to the intensinal lining resulting in malabsorptron of food.
Celiac disease presents as diarrhea , poor growth , anemia , abdominal pain etc. The most important component of treatment in Celiac disease is to avoid foods that contain the chemical gluten.
Gluten is contained in the following foods :-
- Wheat
- Barley
- Rye ( not rai seeds )
What is gluten?
Gluten (from Latin word “Glue”), is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related species including barley and rye. It gives elasticity to dough and gives a desired texture of processed food.
But Gluten have same draw backs when a person with celiac disease eats, drinks anything containing gluten immune system responds by damaging the living of intestinal tract.

Coeliac Disease Spelled celiac disease in north America celiac disease deals with a disorder resulting from an immune (Allergic) reaction to GLUTEN (Protein) found in wheat and related grains and present in many foods. Celiac disease causes impaired absorption and digestion of nutrition through the small intestine which leads to malabsorption, malnutrition.
How celiac disease damages small intestine?
Celiac disease is a genetic disorder when the body reacts poorly to Gluten. The inflammation causes an increased an increased destruction of villi, causing the inner lining of small intestine to become flattened. This loss of villi reduces the no. of cells and surface area available for absorption of nutrients.
